Membership Renewals
At the last committee meeting we had a long debate about the future of BAC in respect of the economic climate at the moment. With this in mind we as your committee have decided that a reduction in the membership fees would be the right thing to do.Hopfullly this would help our members who are finding things a bit difficult at the moment to remain with BAC.The proposal is to reduce the senior fees by £10 and the junior/OAP fees by £5.The admin fee for new members will be suspended untill further notice.

Happy June 16th!

NEWS
Cormorant Watch Web Site Goes Live
We need YOUR support on this. If you see a cormorant, goosander or merganser anywhere, please go to the Angling Trust's new Cormorant Watch web site at www.cormorantwatch.org and record where and when you saw it. We need as much evidence as possible to persuade the Government to take action to protect our fisheries. If everyone takes part and forwards this e-mail on to your fishing friends, then we will have a really powerful piece of evidence to present to the Review being carried out. www.cormorantwatch.org.
Representing Angling to MPs
The Angling Trust last night held a reception for MPs and Peers in conjunction with the Fishmongers' Company in London. Our Chief Executive Mark Lloyd gave a speech and asked for MPs' support for the root and branch reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, for stopping government subsidy of hydropower to the licensing of cormorant controls. MPs offered their support and will be tabling more questions in the House of Commons on our behalf.
Building Bridges with Eastern European Anglers to Fight Fish Theft and Poaching
The Angling Trust has employed Radoslaw Papiewski, an enlightened Polish angler, as our Building Bridges Project Officer. Rado works with Eastern European migrant communities to help anglers from these countries understand UK angling laws and customs. Read more and download anti poaching posters in different languages in a new section on our website HERE . Contact Rado if you have evidence of poaching incidents, or any other illegal angling activities on or near your waters or are planning events or matches to which we could invite members of the Eastern European community. There's still time to register an event for National Fishing Month
The best way to get people to support fishing is for them, or their children, to try it. It also provides a sustainable future for our sport. National Fishing Month (16th July to 14th August) is a unique opportunity for angling to put its best boot forward. If you can organise even a small event, please visit www.nationalfishingmonth.com and register before the end of June. The site also has details of events near you where you can take any budding anglers.
LEGAL NEWS
This month's news from Angling Trust's legal arm, Fish Legal...
Fish Legal Challenges Scottish Government
Fish Legal, in association with the Sustainable Inshore Fisheries Trust (SIFT), has responded in detail to the Scottish Government's fisheries plans contained in the National Marine Plan Pre Consultation Draft. A generous interpretation of the draft plan is that it lacks ambition; a less generous one is that it expresses the wish of the commercial fishing industry to be quietly left to extract the last few remaining fish from Scotland's inshore waters. Unlike salmon fishing, recreational sea angling gets no recognition in the draft plan, despite the fact that it generates similar levels of revenue. More details HERE.
Court proceedings against Glebe Mines
Fish Legal has begun court proceedings against Glebe Mines which allowed a tailings lagoon wall to collapse and dump tonnes of sediments into the Derbyshire Derwent. The quicksand-like conditions in the river bed following the incident made wading impossible for members of the Waltonian Angling Club and caused heavy metals to enter the food chain.
Court papers served on First Milk Cheese Company
Court papers have also been served on the First Milk Cheese Company on behalf of three Cumbrian fishing clubs who wish to restore their wild trout fishery after it was polluted with chemicals used in the manufacture of dairy products at the Aspatria Creamery on the banks of the river Ellen.

inportant notice from the angling trust
Non EA Rod Licence Website Applies Unneccessary Charges to Anglers
The Angling Trust is warning all anglers NOT to buy their licence from the commercial fishingrodlicence.com web site, unless they want to pay an unnecessary extra charge of £14 for checking over their application. This service is of no real benefit to anglers because the Environment Agency (EA) does not require applications to be checked before submission. The web site has been set up this year and comes top of a Google search for "Rod Licence". In addition to the extra charge, anglers buying their licences from the web site will not be able to go fishing until they receive their licence in the post. The EA site offers a receipt and reference number which does allow people to fish while they are waiting for the licence to arrive.
The Angling Trust strongly recommends that all freshwater anglers buy their licence direct from the Environment Agency over the phone or via its website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/31497.aspx, or from Post Offices and clearly authorised outlets. The representative body for all anglers will also be writing to Consumer Direct to complain about the web site and raising the matter with Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP and Charles Walker, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group.
Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: "This site offers no real extra service, but demands a 50% surcharge on top of the rod licence fee and we urge all anglers to spread the word. We would encourage members who have concerns about this website to contact Consumer Direct and their MP. Any unsuspecting new anglers trying to buy their first licence might be put off by the inflated price and decide not to take up fishing."
For more info about writing to Consumer Direct go to www.oft.gov.uk/consumer-advice/oft-and-cd
To find your MP go to findyourmp.parliament.uk
Please make your fishing friends aware of this by clicking HERE to forward them this email.
Please do not forward using Outlook or any other e-mail software; if the recipient clicks on the unsubscribe link then you may not receive e-mails from us in future.
Notes to Editors:
Environment Agency Statement:
We are aware of a website that offers a “rod licence application processing service”. It claims to offer “a comprehensive application service for any angler wishing to obtain a rod license.” It will “check over your application, ensuring there are no errors (for example forename switched with surname, lack of capitalisation in your name, and any obvious spelling errors).”
You pay an additional charge for this service, for example, the service charge for processing a full annual coarse and trout licence is £14, which you pay on top of the £27 licence duty.
The Environment Agency has no connection with this website, nor does it endorse its services.
The service appears to be legal, however, we would like to point out that –
a)
the Environment Agency does not require this check when someone buys their licence through the Agency’s website, over the counter at the Post Office or over the phone. An angler only has to give their name, age, proof of concession where necessary, and post-code and house number – a quick address search completes the rest;
b)
when you buy direct from the Environment Agency’s website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/31497.aspx, at the Post Office or over the phone, you only pay the licence duty – you do not pay any additional charge;
c)
when you buy a licence direct from our website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/31497.aspx or over the phone, you are given a licence reference number and receipt. This allows you to go fishing while we send you your licence in the post. We are not aware that this service can provide such an immediate response, so anglers may not be able to go fishing immediately they have paid for their licence.

workparty dates
There will be three more work parties in February on the following dates,Sunday 8th,15th&22nd.all on Middlewood. Meet in the car park 09-00 prompt. These work parties will be the last ones before the A.G.M.so those who have not yet done their work parties for 2008 this is the last opportunity to do them.
The reason that these dates are available is because of the numbers of members who have not yet done their work parties and because of the amount of work outstanding on our waters.
I will take this opportunity to point out that each member as per the rule book is required to complete one work party per year unless.
They are either a pensioner, junior member;disabled member,or they have opted to pay a levy prior to the start of the season'.
In the past a certain amount of leeway has been allowed, but this has been abused which isn't fair to those who have completed their work party or those who have paid the levy,so those who without justification do not do their work party face expulsion from the club as per the rule book This information will be displayed on the clubs waters, and it will be mentioned at the February meeting.
Geoff Edge. secretary.
